Motoring

Car issues now thankfully resolved. I had both bottom arms replaced for the MOT test the other day [not cheap] and drove home secure in the knowledge - or so I thought -  that that would be that for the next few months. I fuelled the thing up to the brim ready to go and meet Jane at The Stretton Fox Inn just off the M56 Friday lunchtime, went home and parked up for the night. Friday morning came and I made a nice early start, intending to take my time over the journey and have a decent food break at Holywell on the way. On pulling out over the lip of our slightly sunken car park, a very unpleasant metal on metal clunk resounded throughout the vehicle. On driving down the High St towards Rachub Square - a road whose surface quality is more Greek island than North Welsh in nature - I was greeted with more grating and clanking at each hole and speed bump I encountered. So instead of heading onto the A55 East I made straight for my garage in Bangor again.

Turns out that I had sheared the pin of one of the bottom links to the anti-roll bar, leaving one end free to flap around each time the suspension was loaded up on the other side, resulting in a clanking, grating cacophony and which would lead, ultimately, to severe wear and damage to bits various in the car's nether regions; never mind fritzing the handling of the car in the process. The guys at the garage secured and fitted a new link, but it left me running too late to do the trip, so alternative arrangements were made. To make matters worse, there was still a clunk present on driving home - less severe, admittedly - which was ominous enough for me to seek the replacement of the link on the other end of the anti-roll bar, which I had done this afternoon. Result: silence and a little car that handles like new again, cornering very much flatter than it had been for some while. Next thing will be new tyres and the taxing of the Highways Dept. to do something about the state of my bloody road...

  1. Good luck with the Higways dept! I'm after them for pothole damage & despite having some of the worst roads in western Europe they STILL have NO compensation process/regime that ANY one with commonsense; Oh!! we're talking about GC who can't even phase routine maintenance to NOT block the Pesda commuters all the way back to Bryn Bella!
