Good News & Bad News

Despite the semi-clandestine Thatcherite/globalist/corporate/robber-baron moves currently underway under cover of the royal funeral preparations and the accession of the new monarch [cf yesterday's post], there are some positives to be found amongst the outlying organs and feeds available to those who really find themselves quite unable to consume the groupthink of the mainstream media.

Yvon Chouinard, founder of the Patagonia performance-clothing brand, but more importantly to any climber or former climber, one of the most significant of the Yosemite extreme-climbing pioneers, has decided to hand over his company and fortune to a non-profit organization in the fight against climate catastrophe, in a move echoing some other, perhaps more widely-known billionaire names, including Bill Gates.

Also, in an article in this week's New Statesman, The NS Profile byline speculates on how vocal the new King might be on the environment: given that he expressed his frustration at his leaky fountain pen the other day - quite vocally - I suspect he might well find it difficult to maintain the neutrality of demeanour that was his late mother's default position. Even given that he can rein himself in, in public, I think that he might prove to be a massive thorn in the side of government behind the closed doors of state in that regard. At least one hopes so.

I end with the tragic news of the death of Eddie Butler at 65 (pictured above); the former Welsh number eight and captain, who latterly was the voice of Welsh rugby commentary, whose passing I will genuinely mourn, and whose voice I will sorely miss on this year's and subsequent Six Nations coverage of our national sport. He was also a firm advocate for an independent Wales, the debate about which continues, and support for which increases with each political convulsion within the wider UK: a riper time for change within the Celtic heartlands of our islands one couldn't imagine.

  1. I hate to contradict you mate but B. Gates has founded a massive ego project and NOT handed over his fortune! I may hate the bastard for what he did and what MicroShit STILL does but if I could be bothered (I can't) you'll find that the levers of power of "The Foundation" are still operated by the toad. Don't get me started on the fiscally duplicitous and preposterous "Charity" industry that he and his peers inhabit.... I've got shopping to do!
