End of an Era...

The above pictured is very soon to be a thing of the past. The Victoria Hotel in Menai Bridge is soon to close under its present family ownership, who have understandably sold up to a large chain with pockets deep enough both to refurb what is after all a large and expensive to run old hotel, and to weather any further pandemic-related financial setbacks that might befall the hospitality business. I've been eating their estimable bar snack of a cheese and crispy bacon toastie here for over a quarter of a century on and off, and drinking occasionally here for much longer than that. The place closes for three months in a few days time, to re-open under the Greene-King umbrella Chef & Brewer. Another personal venue gone for good, to add to all the others that have closed or mutated over the last few years. Over the road to The Anglesey Arms it is, then...

  1. We've also got a couple of places that we have been using for decades - and have a Chinese takeaway that we used to use at our old house - we left there in 1982!!!!!

Chef & Brewer are pretty poor. It's all microwaved food, although the beer can be OK sometimes. I guess it provides a handful of jobs for people that maybe desperately need them though. It also stops the place falling derelict, which is what is happening to scores of erstwhile famous Birmingham Pubs.

    Keep Safe,

    Phil.

    1. Unfortunately, I can't blame the women you've run the business for years as a family: this last two years has seen their business take a caning and half their staff departing after furlough for other jobs. It's a big old place and they can't compete in the current hotel market without serious investment they won't get. So the decision to cash it in to someone with deeper pockets is eminently sensible and timely. Still a pity though...
