Vigil [for Brian Kyte]

Time: Vigil - 2020, Kel Harvey -

Without wishing to sound like a Government information film: it ain't over yet. SARS-COV-2 and the disease it causes are still out there and still killing people. The time to relax is definitely not now, despite the extraordinary progress on the treatment and vaccine development front. The reason I'm putting this out is that I heard today that the brother of my oldest friend John, had died last night in hospital, from the disease. Although I'd not seen him since we left the Midlands all those years ago, it still seems personal; and although I've lost many friends, family, acquaintances and colleagues over the last few years, Brian is the only one lost to Covid-19. None of us should take anything for granted in this situation; not until mass vaccination really gets underway and even then, it will be many months before we can even think of getting back to any semblance of normal. The price is just too great to take unnecessary chances. Tough though it may be, patience really is a virtue.

  2. Brian and I saw each other a good few times over the years. I remember him from my Peel Street days, so that is going back close to 60 years.

When I worked at Lucas, I used to bump into him from time-to-time at Lucas Aerospace, where he ended up as a Director. Not bad for a Winson Green kid who failed his 11 Plus, went to Handsworth New Road and did all of his studying at nightschool.

......and yes, we are not through this desperate Covid pandemic yet by any measure.

    1. It's doubly tragic that the vaccination programme is so close and that he could have benefited from it. A good life that didn't deserve to end in such a cruel way.
