Putting Pictures to the Names
Yew Walk, Eglwys Llanllechid © 2020 Kel Harvey |
This view hasn't altered much in the forty years we've lived here, and my guess it was substantially the same many years before that. I tweaked the original to give it the atmosphere and look of an old postcard.
I was down there yesterday to photograph the slate sundial in the grounds of the church which, like the building, is Grade II listed. What prompted this was Joe suggesting I take a look at the Wiki Loves Monuments competition page. I might at some point enter something for it, but it was the interactive map that Joe pointed out that got me interested. The map contains pins to thousands of listed sites throughout the UK. Zooming in on our village I was surprised to find all manner of listings; not just the sort of stuff you'd expect, like churches, medieval halls or bronze age sites; but things like the sundial - and - the old phone kiosk in Llanllechid across from the church.
I noticed that most of these local sites hadn't had images recording them posted, so I checked out the process, which is a doddle. I'd already got a WikiCommons ID from years ago, so I uploaded a pic of the phone box and three of the sundial. They go up as commons under open licence, so they can be re-used by anyone who wants to, providing the licence and attribution are mentioned. So I think I'm going to spend some time filling in some of the gaps as I travel about the area and beyond.
The interactive map to search for stuff in your area is here. The link takes you to my village, just zoom back out or search for a place name or postcode to find your place.
I forgot to mention that the one thing that they don't list are the War Memorials mate. So I'm gonna do the local ones and then (NEXT retirement!!:) the A5 milestones. I Need a campervan for that wonder if I could press Julie into being my driver!!:))
