The Great Leader of the NonGovernment® - Guardian front page, today

The rhetorical rule of three takes yet another hammering from the NonGovernment® in the form of their latest Covid-slogan: HANDS FACE SPACE. I feel we could ultimately be able to produce a very large compendium of these tri-phrasal utterances, as the NonGovernment®'s dismal efforts thus far to deal with the pandemic in the UK lead one to believe we're very much in it for the long haul.

With the depressing news of drug trials being stalled on safety grounds, yet another set of rules for the English to follow and rising numbers of infections throughout, I'm glad I live in Wales. However, we too can't afford complacency as we are flooded with tourists at this time of the year, mostly from across the border. Obviously all visitors are welcome; a very large slice of our economy depends on tourism; but there has been so much evidence of people simply ignoring the advice regarding social distancing, etc., we have been expecting a serious spike on this side of Offa's Dyke with apprehension.

But I can't in all conscience blame those holidaying here. I have to lay that on the NonGovernment®'s confusion of direction changes, epidemiological dead-ends and stupid sloganeering. They have been dead set on returning the economy 'back to normal' since day one and have rushed through ill-thought-out changes of strategy in a wholly reactive way instead of sticking with a plan underpinned by an acceptance that the economy has to be frozen and state-centred for the duration of the pandemic. The current and previous two governors of the Bank of England have all said that economically it can be done with minimal long-term fiscal pain.

The only explanation for the NonGovernment®'s behaviour over this, climate change and Brexit - still hanging over the country like the sword of Damocles - and for the fact that ineffectual lapdogs are promoted to Cabinet office and protected from censure or dismissal no matter how appalling their views and performance; that untendered-for contracts are being secured by private companies with contacts within the NonGovernment®'s precincts; is exactly that venal self-interest that has powered the neo-liberal elites' rise to the top of the money-heap over the past decades.

The worrying notes in the latest Downing Street pronouncements regarding enforcement of Covid restrictions suggest that we could be just months away from some form of martial law in England given the historical waypoints we seem to be passing; except that I suspect that the NonGovernment® is held in lower regard throughout the armed forces than it is with the general public. It won't stop the NonGovernment® trying something monumentally stupid if things don't go their way, though; just expect things to get very, very much stranger.

Welcome to The Twilight Zone.
